Care, word by word

Before and after the visit

An assessment puts your health ahead of a menu.

Ask what the person providing care needs to know about your health.

Assessment means looking at your situation.

Set out the concern in your own words, any changes and the improvement you hope for. Include medicines and supplements you already use, and the care you have tried.

Bring questions as well as a history. An offer can wait while a point remains unclear.

A menu choice leaves medical work to do.

Medical boards have a national federation, the Federation of State Medical Boards.

Care falls short when it rests solely on a patient’s menu choice, in that group’s guidance adopted May 2026.

This is guidance. Each state sets the rules that people providing care must follow.

The federation says follow-up must let patients reach their treating professional with questions.

A useful question about tests

“What do you need to know before deciding, and what would a test change?” keeps the purpose in view. Ask who orders any test, where it happens and who explains it.

The next step may be an examination or a test.

This federation’s advice for medical boards is called a model policy.

It guides those boards rather than setting a binding law for every state.

The policy says doctors need to carry out needed tests, arrange them or send the patient somewhere that can.

The policy also says to send patients for an in-person visit when they need a physical exam or procedure.

Settle how the conversation continues.

  • Who reads a message between visits?
  • How will I hear about test results?
  • What will count as a reason to review the plan?
  • What happens if no medicine is offered?
  • How will you send the records to the person who usually treats me?
